Hunt class escort destroyers, types 1 and 2

Begun early in the war, the Hunts were intended to be fast enough to be destroyers, but small and inexpensive enough to be built in quantity. The Type 1s were found to be topheavy, and had to have their armaments reduced to the 4 (2x2) 4" guns and quad pom poms. The Type 2s were "kippered" - split lengthwise and widened - so that they could carry 6 (3x2) 4" guns. The Type 3s - shown under the Minor Combatants page with the Type 4s - returned to 4 4" guns, but had 2 (1x2) 21" torpedo tubes. The two latewar Type 4s were larger, and had the 6 (3x2) 4" guns and 3 (1x3) torpedo tubes.

On the whole, these compact destroyers served well, although the weak torpedo armament early in the war put them at risk against heavy units.

I HAVE DESIGNED A 3-D CARDSTOCK PAPER MODEL SHIP OF THE TYPE 1 SHIP/CLASS.
