Pennsylvania class Battleship

Arizona and Pennsylvania were modernized in 1928-31, tripod masts replacing their old cage masts. Arizona was blown up at Pearl Harbor, and its submerged hull is a national monument near the USS Missouri.

Pennsylvania was damaged at Pearl Harbor, and had twin 5" gun turrets installed as its new secondary battery. It was in the Aleutians and most of the Pacific invasions thereafter, and it was the only one of the old battleships which didn't fire its guns at Leyte Gulf -- its captain not wanting to hit a friendly ship (like the destroyer Albert Grant badly damaged by "friendly" fire). He was criticized for this, but if the Japanese main battleline Center Force had pushed on through the escort carrier task forces at Samar, Pennsylvania might have mitigated the slaughter, if its 21-knot speed had gotten it there.
